British Steel has spread some much-needed festive cheer across Scunthorpe this Christmas, thanks to a bumper round of donations supporting local charities.

The generosity of the company’s suppliers made it possible to provide Christmas vouchers and gifts to three organisations working at the heart of the community: The Blue Door, Jen’s Special Place and the North Lincolnshire Armed Forces Hub.

The initiative was led by Scunthorpe-based employees Karl Smith and Katy Jury, who coordinated the collection with support from colleagues across the site. As well as supporting the three charities, the team also donated gifts to the 58th Doncaster Scout Group, helping them raise funds through a Christmas tombola.

The donations offered a timely boost to organisations providing vital support to local people, underlining the impact that partnership between business, staff and suppliers can have at a community level.

Donations including vouchers, selection boxes, toys and craft materials were very gratefully received from:

Karl Smith, Improvement Co-ordinator, Internal Logistics at British Steel, said: “This has been a fantastic team effort and we are extremely grateful for the generosity of our suppliers. They have really got on board with our Christmas campaign and helped us to make some meaningful donations which will put smiles on faces in the Scunthorpe area this Christmas.”

Katy Jury, Operations and Compliance Co-ordinator at British Steel, also commented: “It’s been amazing to be able deliver these donations to the 3 special charities. We really are very grateful to everyone who has helped us make this happen.”

The Blue Door provides support to victims of violence and domestic abuse, Jen’s Special Place is a child bereavement support charity and the North Lincolnshire Armed Forces Hub provides support for armed forces veterans in relation to health, housing and employment.

All 3 charities work tirelessly all year round to support those in need of their services and really appreciated being able to provide something extra for those requiring their support during the festive period.

The Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Councillor Carol Ross, met with Karl and Katy at Jen’s Special place and said: “I would like to express my deepest appreciation to British Steel for their generous donations of toys and gifts, to Jen's Special Place, one of my chosen charities.”

Steph Price, CEO, The Blue Door, said: “Often service users have left home with very little so Christmas can be a very bleak time. We are thankful to the community and British Steel for helping us spread a little joy during the festive period.”

Melissa Worboys, Community Enablement Development Officer, North Lincolnshire Armed Forces Hub, said: “We are incredibly grateful to British Steel for their generous donation in support of our service children’s Christmas celebration. Service children often live with unique challenges and sacrifices, and opportunities like this to come together, celebrate and feel recognised really matter. Support from local employers such as British Steel helps us turn community goodwill into meaningful moments for our armed forces families.”

Jemma Akers-Jacklin, CEO and Founder of Jen's Special Place, said: “We are over the moon at the generous gift donations you've given! It means a lot to us as a charity to give something special to our young people, especially at Christmas when their grief can be most heightened. Thank you so much for making their Christmas a little brighter!”

In addition to this, colleagues located at Scunthorpe and Teesside have been collecting donations throughout December to donate to local food banks. These collections have now been delivered to the Redcar and Scunthorpe foodbanks and will help to provide assistance to those in need over the festive period.
