The Skipton Building Society Charitable Foundation has reached a donation landmark of £3million.

Since the Foundation’s formation in 2000, the Trustees have continued to meet quarterly and provide dedicated charities with much needed funding. Over the last 23 years, the Foundation has supported worth-while causes across the UK, focusing on social mobility and equality, isolation, and children’s education.

The £3million has been able to fund a wide range of essential projects, from the purchase of a pony for a disabled riding school, craft materials for knit and knatter groups, to specialist beds and equipment for hospices.

The Foundation has remained a constant support for charities, providing a lifeline to many, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic which saw the sector see a significant loss in income and volunteers. During the pandemic, the Trustees remained dedicated to supporting charities in need by performing their meetings via conference calls, donating almost £400,000 to 194 charities throughout 2020 and 2021.

Alison Davies, Skipton Building Society’s Charitable Foundation Chair, said: “It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as a Trustee and Chair for the Foundation, to be able to support such a significant number of charities over the years. £3million has been donated to such amazing charities across the UK that, in some cases, provide life-saving services, but all have an impact on their communities.

“That £3million pound has supported hospices, homeless shelters, schools, residential homes and more. As a Foundation we are proud to play just small part in that.”

The announcement of the Foundation’s donation milestone comes as its donation policy has been updated. Charities wishing to seek funding can now apply for up to £6,000 and previously successful charities are now eligible after just three years, as opposed to the previous restriction of five years.

Skipton Building Society, part of the Skipton Group, makes an annual payment to the charitable foundation to fund all the donations. Funding applications are invited four times a year, with the next meeting taking place in September.
