Cornwall Airport Newquay announces its 2019-20 charity of the year

Cornwall Airport Newquay recently announced Cornwall Blood Bikes as their 2019-20 charity of the year, which was chosen by staff across the Airport. They hope to support them by fundraising as well as raising awareness of the invaluable Cornish charity. Cornwall Blood Bikes are a group of self-funding volunteers operating as a registered charity to provide an “out of hours” courier service to NHS partners throughout Cornwall and beyond. They operate 5pm – 7am weekdays, 24 hours weekends and bank holidays. They receive no funding by the NHS and rely entirely on the generosity of the community. Cornwall Blood Bikes delivers and collects blood, pathology samples, breast milk, and medication for NHS partners throughout Cornwall delivering to Hospitals and Hospices throughout the Southwest. Ian Butler Fundraising Manager and Advanced Rider for Cornwall Blood Bikes commented: ‘We would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to Cornwall Airport Newquay for choosing to support us. Without such support from organisations like the Airport, as a purely volunteer run charity our wheels would not turn and we would not be able to provide our dedicated service to the County’s hospitals and hospices.’ Al Titterington, Managing Director of Cornwall Airport Newquay commented: ‘It’s fantastic to be supporting such a great cause as Cornwall Blood Bikes. One of the Airport’s Air Traffic Control Assistants is a long standing volunteer with Cornwall Blood Bikes so it is great to be able to link the two organisations in this way.’ Last year in 2018 the Blood Bikes covered over 123,000 operational miles and completed more than 2,000 operational jobs. It is believed last year alone they saved the NHS in Cornwall more than £175,000.
