London Stansted’s fifth annual Runway Run saw hundreds of participants take to the tarmac for a unique 5km challenge, raising £9,000 for the airport’s three chosen charities – Medcare, Magic Breakfast, and The Children’s Society.
Held at 1am, when no flights were scheduled, the event gave around 200 runners, joggers, and walkers a rare opportunity to race along the airport’s runway.
The event welcomed a mix of airport colleagues and local residents for a memorable night of community spirit, fitness, and fundraising.
Nick Millar, Operations Director at London Stansted, said:
“At London Stansted, we believe in giving back to the community wherever we can and supporting good causes that are close to our hearts. The Runway Run is a brilliant way to combine our love of running with fundraising for our charity partners, while also engaging our colleagues and local residents in something truly unique.”
Participants shared their excitement in being part of the milestone event:
Peter Round, HR People Adviser for MAG Stansted, said:
“Running on the actual runway was surreal, it’s not every day you get to do that! Knowing it was for charity made it even more special."
Margaret Crabtree, Airport Services Manager at Emirates, said:
“It was a fantastic event and so lovely to see so many people getting involved. It was a fun and uplifting way to raise money for a great cause. Huge congratulations to everyone who took part!"
Airport firefighter Simon Phillips, who completed the race in full firefighting kit, added:
“Running 5k in full gear definitely wasn’t easy, but the support from everyone kept me going. It was great fun and all for three brilliant causes. I’m already looking forward to next year’s run."
The Runway Run is part of London Stansted’s wider commitment to community engagement, which includes charitable giving, volunteering, and education initiatives.
The event took place in the early hours of Monday, 3 November 2025.
