New ‘Making a Difference Fund’ to support community-building projects

Clarion Housing Group is marking its 125th anniversary with the launch of a new grant initiative aimed at bringing communities together. Through its charitable foundation, Clarion Futures, the Group has unveiled the Making a Difference Fund, which will award grants of up to £5,000 to partner organisations delivering creative and inclusive community projects.

As part of the first phase of the fund, £50,000 will be distributed to support initiatives that foster connection, belonging, and pride among Clarion residents. Priority will be given to proposals that spark community engagement — from murals and local art installations to gardening clubs and social inclusion events.

The fund is a key part of Clarion’s year-long anniversary celebrations, commemorating its roots dating back to 1900, when Victorian entrepreneur William Sutton bequeathed his fortune to build some of London’s first social housing. Now, 125 years on, Clarion continues to build on that legacy with a focus on strong, resilient communities.

Phil Miles, Director of Clarion Futures, said:

“As we celebrate Clarion’s 125th anniversary, we wanted to ensure our residents are central to the journey. That’s what inspired the Making a Difference Fund — a way to support creative, meaningful projects that reflect the character and strengths of our communities.
It’s about recognising what makes our neighbourhoods special and leaving a legacy that future generations can be proud of. I’m looking forward to seeing the inspiring ideas that come forward.”

A second phase of the programme will launch later in the year, offering an additional £75,000 to support projects that promote physical activity and wellbeing, bringing the total investment to £125,000 — a symbolic nod to the anniversary milestone.

To ensure the fund reflects community voices, Clarion residents will be involved in the decision-making process as part of the judging panel.

Applications for the first round of funding are now open and will close at midday on 25 June 2025.
