Cardiff Airport chooses Velindre Cancer Centre as its charity of the year for 2020/21

Cardiff Airport is delighted to announce Velindre Cancer Centre as its chosen charity of the year for 2020/21. This exciting news comes as a result of an airport-wide vote, where each team member chose their favourite charity from 5 shortlisted charities that were identified following an application process earlier in 2019. Velindre Cancer Centre provides specialist cancer services to over 1.5 million people in South East Wales, and strives to provide the best possible care and treatment to patients and families affected by cancer, as well as providing specialist training to healthcare professionals in the region. As their nominated charity of the year, the partnership will see the Cardiff Airport team working with Velindre Cancer Centre to arrange events and activities at the Airport to raise vital funds, and will run from January 2020 until March 2021. Cardiff Airport has already raised over £500 for the charity after arranging a coastal walk in September, where the team and their friends and family walked challenging stretches along the Wales Coast Path. Deb Bowen Rees, CEO of Cardiff Airport, said, “We’re so excited at the prospect of working with Velindre Cancer Centre. The charity does such important work and is close to the hearts of everyone at Cardiff Airport, sadly there are very few of us that have not been affected by cancer at some point in our lives. “This is an opportunity for people across all departments to work together and develop innovative ways to raise money for an organisation that does so much to support the local community. “The partnership marks the start of an exciting journey ahead where we will be working with charities and supporting community projects as part of our recently launched Touchdown Programme.” Andrew Morris Head of Fundraising at Velindre Cancer Centre, added, “We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as Cardiff Airport’s charity of the year and cannot thank the team enough for their support. “The year 2020 is particularly relevant as by next year one in two of us will be affected by cancer, however through better treatments and early detection more people than ever are living with cancer and survival rates have doubled in the last 40 years. The money raised through our partnership with Cardiff Airport will be used to fund things over and above those provided by the NHS, so fundraising really does make a huge difference.” Charity support forms part of Cardiff Airport’s Touchdown Programme, which launched earlier this year.
